Song Review: Happy Little Pill by Troye Sivan

TROYE SIVAN HAD legions of fans even before releasing his hit single – courtesy of two million subscribers on YouTube.

And now that he’s got a sweet record deal with Universal Music Australia… well, let’s just say we’re expecting a lot more screaming and crying teenage girls in the future.

The moody melody, Happy Little Pill, quickly skyrocketed to the top of the charts after its release in late July. Critics have drawn comparisons between Sivan’s atmospheric style and the honeyed tones of sullen songstress Lana Del Ray.

While the song does come across as depressingly down-tempo, it’s impossible not to murmur along to lines like: “My happy little pill/Take me away/Dry my eyes/Bring colour to my skies.”

The music video stars a haunted-looking Sivan gazing out through a window, interspersed with shots of people going about their mundane daily routines and (mystifyingly) an owl flapping.
